Hampel Finishes Strong with First- and Second-Place Awards at SPE Parts Competition
Industry awards recognized company’s leading Calf-Tel system, innovative pump cover design
Germantown, Wis. (Sept. 27, 2013) – L.T. Hampel Corp.’s continuous innovation and commitment to quality have earned the company two awards in the Society of Plastics Engineers Thermoforming Division Parts Competition.
Hampel won first place for its best-selling dairy calf housing product, Calf-Tel®, in the twin sheet forming category. It also won second place for a hydraulic pump cover in the pressure forming category. The awards mark the second consecutive year that Hampel has earned recognition in the Parts Competition.
“The Calf-Tel is used by millions of customers the world over as a reliable calf housing option, and we’re honored that the SPE continues to recognize the product as industry leading,” said Paul Lorge, President and CEO of Hampel. “At the same time, we’re also pleased that these awards reflect our capability to manufacture a diverse line of leading products.”
Company wins first place for Calf-Tel
The twin sheet forming award showcases the latest advances and innovation in thermoforming design and application. The Calf-Tel is an indoor pen system designed to house dairy calves until about 60 days of age. The pen – which is the only thermoformed dairy calf housing product available – was designed to be lightweight, durable, easy to clean and modular.
The innovative features of the product for which it was recognized include:
- Effective use of twin sheet forming – The freestanding parts have the required rigidity that could not have been accomplished with single sheet vacuum forming.
- Appropriate material selection – A coextruded polyethylene material was used to achieve aesthetic appeal and provide a cost-effective product.
- Advanced tooling utilization – The pen door, door frame, door handle and feed divider are formed together on one family tool to reduce part costs and cycle time.
Award also recognizes hydraulic pump cover
Hampel’s other award recognition, in the pressure forming category, was a hydraulic pump cover used on a commercial snow plow assembly unit. The part presented numerous design challenges and inherent forming difficulties. Due to its exposure to rugged and harsh conditions, the part was made from a smooth sheet of black polyethylene.
The product was also noted for its detailed logo and texture design that were achieved with a pressure forming process. In addition to the customer’s brand name and logo mark, a very small registration mark also had to be included.
The SPE Thermoforming Parts Competition is open to thermoformers around the world, and was judged by a panel of industry experts. Awards were presented at the 2013 SPE Thermoforming Conference on Sept. 10.
